About Jim

I grew up in a Hungarian home. I don’t know what that means, but what I do know is that you eat a lot and argue about everything. My wife is a German. I know, but hey, I love the girl. We have been married for over 30 years and we have 3 great kids.

My parents escaped from Hungary after the Revolution in ’56. My Dad and Mom (who was 3 months pregnant with me), left their home with only the clothes on their backs. I can remember Mom telling us after they had escaped to Austria, they were asked where they wanted to go: she replied, that as a child she learned about a country that was free – and wanted to go there.

Raised as a Roman Catholic, I wasn’t serious about my faith until Jr High when I picked up a copy of “Good News for Modern Man”, a modern translation of the New Testament. I started reading it. I began reading it everyday, over and over again.

During this time I came to faith in Christ. I can’t give you a day, time or hour – it just happened. I began to pray. I confessed my sins. I purposed to live for Him however imperfectly, but yet I knew He had my life.

Then came the moment that I surrendered everything to Christ as my Lord. During the summer before 9th grade, my younger brother was drowning when our family spent the day at the lake. It was a surreal moment. My parents were on shore totally unaware of what was going on. He was calling out to me to save him. I was not the best swimmer in the world, I was not a good swimmer at all. As I made my way to him I prayed, “Lord, if you let me save my brother I will give you everything!” I got to him just after he gave up and went under. I found out that he had accidentally went into deeper water while looking for his lost face mask. As I walked to shore with my brother clinging to me I thought, “Wouldn’t it be cool if my foot hit that mask and both would be saved?” The lake was murky that day and you couldn’t see bottom, but you guessed it: my foot hit the mask.

I made good on my promise and dedicated myself to the study of Scripture and being active in sharing the Gospel with others. But instead of staying within the Catholic Church, I had Christian friends in school that attended a non-denominational church. Thus begun my spiritual journey. I attended a Pentecostal college, became a United Methodist youth pastor, got into Reformed theology and I even became a member of a Baptist church. After reading a biography about Martin Luther, I was drawn to the Church and it’s historical beginnings. This journey led me to become an Anglican priest.

But I hungered for more. I wanted to avoid at all costs my starting point. But it wasn’t to be: God wouldn’t let it go. Over and over again He brought me back to full circle, back to the Catholic church.

So now I see myself as a Catholic advocate: to love, care for and defend the Catholic faith, but also care for the whole Body of Christ. I am committed in fostering love and understanding between Catholics, Protestants and other non-Catholic Christians. Knowing that we are one in Body in Christ, we can learn from each other, and work together to glorify our Lord in building a Culture of Life.

A little bit of housekeeping…

  2. After reading so much doom and gloom that is in this hour all over the world I am so greatful that Our Lord is still there. Thank You for removing the roof again so the Light of the World, Jesus Christ could shine in again. Your Testimony really reached my heart and took my mind off the darkness that is covering the earth. I think it was in the book of Isaiah where He spoke about this day. And He said “But The Lord Shall Arise Upon Thee and His Glory Shall Be Seen Upon Thee”. Wow, its funny how and when we remember the scriptures. Thank You for reminding me that we are not alone.

    Hey Jim,

Great bio and thanks for posting Rep. McCotter’s video on Neda. He’s the second-highest Catholic in House GOP leadership as an aside.

Would you like to receive his regular statements and videos from our office? If so, e-mail me at jameson.cunningham@mail.house.gov and I’ll add you.

    Thanks,
    Jameson Cunningham

  4. This has to be one of the greatest accidental discoveries I’ve made on the web.
I am going to email your blog to all of my friends especially those of whom are Catholic including the lukewarm ones.
Thanks for posting your blogs, they are food for thought and they are dead on target.

  5. Just found your blog today. I am looking forward to checking out your articles. I am not sure how you made it back to RC from Reformed, though.

  6. A friend linked me to you. I’m thankful. Great blog; your bio is inspirational.

  7. thank you!
    I’m pro-life, life-chain, tea partier and 912-er. Nice, quiet,Catholic girl…

until I read/hear/see or even think about what is happening to our wonderful country.

I asked my pastor’s advice on what to do about what comes out of my mouth when I get angry with the current administration, which is daily.
He advised me to repeat the Prayer of St. Francis, because that’s what he does and he thinks it helps.

I also pray to the Holy Spirit to bless my lips. What comes out of them is pretty uncivil, sometimes.

Now, here’s a whole new debacle. Would my taxes be used to fund abortions? Refusing to pay them could land me in jail. Right?

Here’s a whole new sign for me to carry.

  8. I found your site via Redstate, then the Malkin blog, purely an “accident.” Your bio is amazing, your site is just the boost I need. I’m bookmarking a new favorite.
Thanks, so much, for the wonderful testimony.

  9. Hey, found you by accident too.
Great life story, you truly have been blessed.
    Keep up the good works!

  10. Dear Jim:

Just read your story. I had a similar path , found Jesus in 1973, The Good News Version was my favorite, read it cover to cover in a few weeks. But sadly was pulled out of the Church by the anti-Catholics in the fellowship group I had my “conversion” experience with.
God bless all you do for Jesus and His Church,
    Russ Rentler, M.D
